The Ocean Institute has become nationally known for its hands-on marine science, environmental education and maritime history programs. More than 110,000 K-12 students and 8,000 teachers annually participate in the Institute's 61 award-winning, immersion style programs. To learn about oceanography, science, and California history, students voyage onto the ocean, study in labs and live aboard tall ships or in the chaparral, where they can feel and taste the salty sea spray, sort through live specimens, observe migrating whales, collect scientific data and investigate the culture and world around them. On weekends, we open our doors to the public for a sneak peek into how ocean science, history, and literature are used to inspire life-long learners! We welcome you to come explore our world and plan your next visit to the Institute.

"The Pilgrim"

Living so close to the beautiful California coast is a gift Kurt And I never take for granted. Besides the amazing scenery the local beaches provide, the diversity of marine life in the Coastal reigon of Southern California is captivating! The Ocean Institute, nested between  the cliffs at  Dana Point Harbor and the gorgeous shoreline, offers hands-on marine science, environmental education and maritime history programs.
The Ocean Institute also hosts the annual Toshiba Tall Ships Festival, which Kurt, the kids and I look forward to every year, and attend usually decked out like pirates! Arrrgh! We often walk the tidepools at the north side of the harbor, and enjoy teaching the kids about the fragile life that abounds in the beautiful place we are so very blessed to live.
When we learned of the Ocean Institute as a possibility for a ceremony venue, Kurt and I were both very excited! Erin Taylor had done her homework and discovered that weddings at the Ocean Institute provide a one-of-a-kind, unforgettable experience!
A tall ship, by the name of "The Pilgrim" sits docked at it's home, The Ocean Institute...and has been generously offered as the ceremony venue for Kurt and I!! This magical, fairytale wedding just got even more magical! Erin, Kurt and myself recently took a tour of the magnificent ship, and fell in love with her charm and history.  Our most heartfelt thanks, and sincerest gratitude go to the Ocean Institute, it's wonderful volunteer staff, all of it's directors, and a very special thanks to Karin Wyman, Maritime Coordinator, for the tour of this "magical" ship...and her special history, and for helping to make this event the fairytale that it is.
